(trendingpoliticsnews) – A fiery Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) wrangled with a reporter who questioned his sincerity on issues of immigration just as the Title 42 pandemic-era policy expired and tens of thousands of migrants began entering the United States.
“How long have you been in office?” the reporter asked as Cruz talked over him. “This has been a kick-the-can during multiple administrations.” The senator did not skip a beat in his response:
“It is an utter and complete lie. In 2020, the last year of the Trump presidency, we had the lowest rate of illegal immigration in 45 years. You asked what have I done? I’ve championed the men and women of border control. I’ve championed securing the border. I’ve championed ‘remain in Mexico.’ And we turned this problem around and solved it, and we went from Joe Biden inherited the lowest rate of illegal immigration in 45 years, and the first day in office he made political decisions to cause this problem,” Cruz thundered.
President Joe Biden’s administration is under tremendous pressure to stanch the flow of migrants entering the country after ending a policy that allowed for immediate deportation ostensibly to prevent the transmission of Covid-19. The previous policy, Title 8, is now in place and allows for migrants who enter the country illegally to have extended stays while border patrol agents work to process and deport them. The president has defended the measure as strict, saying illegal entrants could face up to five-year bans from entering the United States.
At the same time, critics on the left have accused President Biden of walking back campaign promises to institute a more “humane” situation which left rates of illegal immigration in his first year in office at a 20-year high. Americans sharply disagree with the president’s handling of immigration matters, with just 26 percent now approving of his performance.
